This is copy and pasted from a thread I started on another forum.I had an interesting debate/argument with my brother earlier about how, in a society gripped by a credit crunch searching for the cheapest methods of doing something, it is unnaceptable to wear clothes that aren't adorned with brand logos. Here is a perfectly good white t-shirt from Next, who are hardly associated with low quality. Here is a painfully similar t-shirt adorned with a tiny Lacoste crocodile. Now, look at the price difference. I accept that the Lacoste one will be better material and more comfortable, but I very much doubt that the extra quality justifies the extra £28 that you have to pay. You are basically paying for that tiny little crocodile. I bet that if you bought the shirt from Next and sewed a Lacoste logo on it, whoever you gave it to would be none the wiser. Don't get me wrong, I like branded clothes. I just don't see the necessity for logos purely to achieve the status boost that comes packaged with them. So, next time you see someone who is wearing a lesser brand than you, just think that it is probably more or less the same.

I totally agree. Although I do wear brands I think that £28 is a ridiculous amount to pay for a small crocidile on the t-shirt just because it was made by a 'better' company. I didn't think that most kids actually cared whether or nto toher kids wore brands or not untill I wore 'fake' converse to school once last year. Several members of my class (including people I would call friends) said "Oh my god, you're wearing fake converse, it's a sin, it's like raping a dolphin etc.". I was extremely shocked and annoyed. Lots of people feel very pressured into wearing brands because they feel they'll be laughed at for wearing the wrong brand, which in fact does happen. Although I do wear real converse too, I don't really think there's much difference except a logo on the side and back. Especially since the fake ones cost £4 and the real ones cost about £35.

Hey look come on. Clothing is clothing. It's not there to make us look high or low status. It's there to keep us warm and protected. The styles just make us look nice and presentable. However, because of this little reason of looking nice, brands have taken the media into there own hands and told youths that this is the stuff to wear, if you don't have this then your not cool or not gangster etc etc. Everything the youths get is basically from the media.

Yeah, also you see other people in movies or tv shows wearing brands so you think 'well they wear it so it's cool'

Although clothing should just be about protection and keeping us warm, in today's modern society it no longer is. You are constantly bombarded with adverts telling you what to buy and how to act. And of course the media have a part to play, the media have a part to play in everything. The media is in my opinion the most important form of secondary socialization (What children learn their culture from) because it influences your choices and decisions on things such as branding. The media also reinforce gender socialization, which is the idea that boys and girls are separate within society, this is linked back to branding because the media would consider certain brands to be "girlie" for example and thus advertise them to girls. And I've just gone off topic with the media stuff, haven't I? Oops, sorry, but it's one of things that really does interest me.

Also, I think there is a media thread if you want to let loose with all that stuff.

i like brands, i think all of my clothes are branded... but its only like tesco food and then M&S food... M&S is better everytime, but not everybody shops there because it is more expensive, making it more exclusive meaning people want to be in it more, as its human nature to want to be better than other people.
